DiVinely Sucessful

St. James’ first DiVine Wines & Wheys fundraiser proved to be a fun and successful event.  Over 120 parishioners and community residents joined in the festivities held at St. James on November 11th.

Wines from eight different wine distributors representing American, Spanish, Chilean, Italian, German, Australian and South African vineyards were featured in our wine tasting. We also served numerous signature cheeses from a number of  award-winning Wisconsin cheese makers including Schullsberg Brick, President’s Brie, Beechwood White Cheddar and Weyauwega Star Dairy Baby Swiss. Delectable hors d’oeuvres such as turkey, roast beef and ham wraps, shrimp, fruit, artisan breads and brownies were also part of the menu.

Our silent and live auctions offered event guests opportunities to bid on over 85 different items ranging from a Sony Bravia 32” flat-screened TV monitor to a gourmet wine dinner, artwork, sports memorabilia/tickets, and decorative items. All in all, the auction portion of our evening raised over $5,000 alone for St. James’ general operating budget.

Ticket sales and cash donations raised our total fundraiser profit to over $7,500 after
expenses. This means we had an incredibly successful inaugural fundraiser. Plans to make next year’s DiVine Wines & Wheys event even better are already underway

Many, many thanks to the volunteers who dedicated hours of hard work planning and carrying out the logistics needed to make DiVine Wines & Wheys successful.

Special thanks to Sue Opelt, Alice Branta, Mary Ann Peterson, Ray McIntire, Phil Hway, John Radcliffe, Daryl Laatsch, Gerianne Kelly, Jim Knaak, Peggy Cechvala, Bill Schulze, Judy Schulze, Belva Zocher-Burke, Jim Noren, Ron Kegley, Jim Opelt, Bob Mulaug, Kurt Opelt, and our middle- & high-school volunteers who helped to set-up and work the fundraiser.

A great big thanks also to all our auction, in-kind and cash donors. We could not have achieved this successful outcome without your generous donations.  Our DiVine Wines & Wheys Fundraiser was a wonderful event for our church. We have been getting compliments and requests for another event next year from many of this year’s guests. So—be sure to keep the second Saturday in November 2007 open!

St. James' Supports African Team Ministries

African Team Ministries, an intermediary ministry involving several denominations sponsoring ministry in East Africa, will be sending us their current selection of handmade items. These generally include unusual creches, carved wooden animals, stoneware and stone pieces, scarves, purses, ornaments, and stone and silver jewelry items for us to peruse for Christmas and holiday shopping. All of these items are always reasonably priced. Money goes to support church work in East Africa and provide employment for the people making these items.

On Sundays, December 3 and 10, we will have the displays available in the Common room. These items, which make wonderful gifts, may be paid for by cash, check or credit card.
